The high plant diversity in alpine to subalpine grasslands is threatened by the abandonment of land use. In addition, changing environmental conditions might lead to vegetation shifts even when traditional land use is maintained, as observed in grasslands in Switzerland during the last decades. Maintaining and restoring the diversity of such grasslands might therefore require modified management methods. We conducted a six-year experiment to assess the responses of plant species richness, mean ecological indicator values, and vegetation composition to five management treatments, including scraping as additional management measure: haymaking (in autumn), haymaking complemented by scraping (i.e. manual raking) in autumn, haymaking complemented by scraping in spring, only scraping in spring, and abandonment of land use. We hypothesized that haymaking complemented by scraping in either season would remove additional biomass and increase species richness by creating open patches that can reduce inter-specific competition and promote species establishment. We found positive effects of haymaking complemented by scraping on plant species richness and habitat quality, indicated by the increased mean indicator value for light. Abandonment showed the opposite effects and increased mean indicator values for nutrients. Interestingly, haymaking combined with scraping in autumn promoted the development of the vegetation towards the composition similar to the resident vegetation type. Our findings show that extensive land use is essential to maintain species-rich alpine to subalpine grasslands. Further, they imply that modified land use can compensate for the negative developments such as reduced habitat quality and species richness caused by environmental changes and help restore the vegetation.

Saproxylic beetles and fungi are regularly used as indicators of naturalness in natural forest reserves. In order to assess the initial state of these two groups of organisms, an inventory was carried out in 2022 and 2023 on 70 plots distributed within the perimeter of the Jorat Nature Park, i.e. in its protected area as a natural forest reserve and in its transition zone. In total, 393 species of saproxylic beetles and 376 species of saproxylic fungi were inventoried. For now, the two areas of the NaturePark show very similar beetle and fungal communities. A repetition of this inventory in the future will highlight the evolution of the forest and the effects of the abandonment of logging on the diversity of saproxylic species.

Les coléoptères et champignons saproxyliques sont régulièrement utilisés comme indicateurs de la naturalité dans les réserves forestières naturelles. Afin d'évaluer l'état initial de ces deux groupes d'organismes, un inventaire a été conduit en 2022 et 2023 sur 70 placettes distribuées dans le périmètre du Parc naturel du Jorat, soit dans son aire protégée également réserve forestière naturelle et dans sa zone de transition. Au total, 393 espèces de coléoptères saproxyliques et 376 espèces de champignons saproxyliques ont été inventoriées. Pour l'heure, les deux zones du Parc naturel montrent des communautés de coléoptères et de champignons très similaires.
Une répétition de cet inventaire dans le futur permettra de mettre en évidence l'évolution de la
forêt et les effets de l'abandon de l'exploitation du bois sur la diversité des espèces saproxyliques
 

Das Einrichten von Naturwaldreservaten ist eine wichtige Massnahme zur Erhaltung und Förderung der Biodiversität im Wald - das gilt besonders für Arten, die auf späte Waldentwicklungsstadien und Totholz angewiesen sind. Im Rahmen des Projekts «Biodiversität und Habitatstrukturen im Wildnispark Zürich Sihlwald» untersuchten wir zwischen 2016 und 2020 vier Organismengruppen (Moose, Flechten, xylobionte Käfer und totholzbewohnende Pilze) auf 69 Probeflächen der kantonalen Stichprobeninventur. Um zu verstehen, wie ihr Vorkommen mit verschiedenen Waldparametern zusammenhängt, verglichen wir Modelle, die auf Inventurdaten basieren, mit solchen, die nur Fernerkundungsdaten verwenden. Während ein etwas stärkerer Zusammenhang der Artenvielfalt totholzbewohnender Pilze mit Inventurdaten (z.B. Totholzvolumen) gefunden wurde, waren es bei den xylobionten Käfern eher Fernerkundungsdaten (z.B. Vegetationshöhe). Bemerkenswert ist, dass der Sihlwald nach knapp 20 Jahren ohne Bewirtschaftung einige Artenhighlights beherbergt, etwa die Zitronengelbe Tramete (Antrodiella citrinella) - der Pilz gilt als sogenannte Urwaldart. Unsere Modelle liefern wertvolle Hinweise darauf, wie zukünftige Biodiversitätsmonitorings mithilfe von Fernerkundung unterstützt werden können. Zudem bilden die erhobenen Daten die Grundlage für ein Langzeitmonitoring der Biodiversität im grössten Naturwaldreservat der Schweiz in der Buchenwaldstufe und ermöglichen in Zukunft Aussagen über die Entwicklung des Waldes zu einem Refugium für Arten, die in bewirtschafteten Wäldern kaum überleben können.

Favolaschia calocera est une espèce de champignon décomposeur du bois. Considéré comme invasif, notamment en Nouvelle-Zélande, il se répand actuellement en Europe. La propagation de ce champignon, originaire des tropiques, est probablement due aux exportations de bois, le réchauffement croissant du climat favorisant sa propagation vers le nord. Ainsi, il a migré de l'Italie vers le Tessin, où il a été trouvé pour la première fois en 2015, puis en 2020. Il a également été observé dans le canton de Berne. Pour l'instant, cette espèce ne constitue pas une menace sérieuse en Suisse, bien qu'on la soupçonne de pouvoir remplacer d’autres espèces de champignons. Malgré cela, ses composants toxiques semblent être utiles dans la lutte contre certaines maladies comme la malaria.

Favolaschia calocera è una specie di fungo decompositore del legno. Considerato invasivo, soprattutto in Nuova Zelanda, attualmente si sta diffondendo anche in Europa. La diffusione di questo fungo, originario dei tropici, è probabilmente dovuta alle esportazioni di legname. Il crescente riscaldamento del clima favorisce la diffusione verso nord. Il fungo è quindi migrato dall'Italia al Ticino dove è stato trovato per la prima volta nel 2015 e in seguito nel 2020. È stato osservato anche nel Canton Berna. Per il momento questa specie non rappresenta una seria minaccia in Svizzera, anche se si sospetta che sia in grado di rimpiazzare altre specie fungine. Malgrado questo aspetto i suoi componenti tossici sembrano però poter essere utili nella battaglia di alcune malattie come la malaria.

Der Zunderschwamm gehört mit seiner stattlichen Grösse sicherlich zu den bekanntesten holzbewohnenden Pilzarten. Als «Förster» des Buchenwaldes wie auch als «Feuerzeug» der Steinzeit prägt er Wälder und Menschen in Europa seit Jahrhunderten mit. In diesem Artikel werden der Pilz selbst sowie seine Verbindungen mit den Bäumen, uns Menschen und anderen Lebewesen ausführlich vorgestellt.

Daten aus dem nationalen Daten- und Informationszentrum der Pilze der Schweiz (www.swissfungi.ch) zeigen, dass die Buche für weit über 2000 Pilzarten als Partner oder Wirt dienen kann. Warum gibt es diese Vielzahl an Interaktionen mit Pilzen und was bedeuten diese Interaktionen für das Leben der Buche und für das Ökosystem Wald? Diesen Fragen sollen in diesem Artikel nachgegangen werden.

Favolaschia calocera ist eine holzabbauende Pilzart, die insbesondere in Neuseeland als invasiv gilt und zurzeit in Europa in Ausbreitung begriffen ist. Wahrscheinlich haben Holzexporte zur heutigen globalen Verbreitung der Art geführt, aber die zunehmende Erwärmung des Klimas erleichtert dem aus den Tropen stammenden Pilz zusätzlich die natürliche Ausbreitung nach Norden. So ist er von Italien aus ins Tessin eingewandert, wo er 2015 das erste Mal gefunden wurde. 2020 fand man ihn auch im Kanton Bern. Aber auch wenn er im Verdacht steht, andere Pilzarten verdrängen zu können, so stellt er in der Schweiz zurzeit dennoch keine ernsthafte Gefahr dar. Seine giftigen Inhaltsstoffe könnten zudem im Kampf gegen Krankheiten wie Malaria nützlich sein.
 

Context: Dead wood is a key habitat for saproxylic species, which are often used as indicators of habitat quality in forests. Understanding how the amount and spatial distribution of dead wood in the landscape affects saproxylic communities is therefore important for maintaining high forest biodiversity.
Objectives: We investigated effects of the amount and isolation of dead wood on the alpha and beta diversity of four saproxylic species groups, with a focus on how the spatial scale influences results.
Methods: We inventoried saproxylic beetles, wood-inhabiting fungi, and epixylic bryophytes and lichens on 62 plots in the Sihlwald forest reserve in Switzerland. We used GLMs to relate plot-level species richness to dead wood amount and isolation on spatial scales of 20–200 m radius. Further, we used GDMs to determine how dead wood amount and isolation affected beta diversity.
Results: A larger amount of dead wood increased beetle richness on all spatial scales, while isolation had no effect. For fungi, bryophytes and lichens this was only true on small spatial scales. On larger scales of our study, dead wood amount had no effect, while greater isolation decreased species richness. Further, we found no strong consistent patterns explaining beta diversity.
Conclusions: Our multi-taxon study shows that habitat amount and isolation can strongly differ in the spatial scale on which they influence local species richness. To generally support the species richness of different saproxylic groups, dead wood must primarily be available in large amounts but should also be evenly distributed because negative effects of isolation already showed at scales under 100 m.

Die Arten verteilen sich folgendermassen auf ihr ökologisches Spektrum: Totholz (100 Arten), Stängel, Blätter, Blüten und Früchte insbesondere krautiger Pflanzen (29 Arten), Moose (16 Arten), Pilze (9 Arten), Dung (6 Arten), Käfer (4 Arten), Erde (36 Arten, davon 3 auf Brandstellen und 2 an uringetränkten Stellen). 31 Arten sind nicht eindeutig einem ökologischen Spektrum zuzuordnen.
Der Verbreitungsschwerpunkt der meisten Arten liegt in der montanen Stufe, 15 Arten sind schwerpunktmässig subalpin oder alpin verbreitet. Mehrere Arten sind erst in den letzten Jahren neu beschrieben worden.

The species are distributed as follows across their ecological spectrum: deadwood (100 species), stems, leaves, flowers and fruits, especially of herbaceous plants (29 species), mosses (16 species), fungi (9 species), dung (6 species), beetles (4 species), soil (36 species, of which 3 on burnt areas and 2 on urine-damaged areas). 31 species cannot be clearly assigned to an ecological spectrum.
The distribution of most species is concentrated in the montane zone, 15 species are mainly distributed in the subalpine or alpine zone. Several species have been newly described only in recent years.

Avec photos, dessins et descriptions détaillées, cet ouvrage présente des collections personnelles de 200 ascomycètes non lichenisés de huit classes (Pezizomycetes, Leotiomycetes, Lecanoromycetes, Eurotiomycetes, Geoglossomycetes, Sordariomycetes, Dothideomycetes, Laboulbeniomycetes), à partir de récoltes faites en Suisse entre 1997 et 2019.
Les espèces sont réparties selon leur spectre écologique de la manière suivante : bois mort (100 espèces), tiges, feuilles, inflorescences et fruits provenant en particulier de plantes à feuilles (29 espèces), mousses (16 espèces), champignons (9 espèces), excréments (6 espèces), coléoptères (4 espèces), sol (36 espèces), dont 3 sur des places à feu et 2 sur des sites imbibés d'urine, 31 espèces ne peuvent être classées clairement dans un spectre écologique.
La plupart des espèces se rencontrent surtout à l'étage montagnard, 15 espèces occupant principalement des sites des étages subalpin ou alpin. Plusieurs descriptions concernent des espèces découvertes et récoltées ces dernières années.
