Research interests

I am interested in the biology and ecology of fungal pathogens of forest trees in natural and artificial (plantations) ecosystems. My research activity has focused on three different model organisms:

1) Phytophthora ramorum (Oomycete), the causal agent of Sudden Oak Death

2) Cryphonectria parasitica (Ascomycete), the chestnut blight fungus

3) Armillaria ostoyae (Basidiomycete), the Armillaria root rot fungus

Projekte

Systematische Überwachung von Bodensubstrat, Kompost, Bewässerungsanlagen sowie Abflusswasser in Baumschulen hilft zur Früherkennung von potentiellen Infektionsherden. Mit entsprechenden Massnahmen kommt man so dem Ziel näher, dass nur gesunde Pflanzen für forstliche Anpflanzugen verwendet werden.

Many ash trees in Switzerland are affected by ash dieback and show crown damage. We are investigating how ash dieback and Armillaria root rot affect the resistance of ash trees to uprooting and stem breakage with the aim that hazardous trees can be identified more reliably and removed if necessary.

Hyperparasitism, the fundamental relationship between two parasitic organisms typically provides the basis for biological control. We investigate the infection dynamics of a mycovirus, which acts as biological control agent of the introduced tree disease.

The aim of this project is to determine the effect of climate change on the spread and incidence of chestnut blight in the southern Alps of Switzerland.

Mit molekularen Methoden versuchen wir der Ursache für erkrankte Bäume auf den Grund zu gehen - und stossen dabei nicht selten auf sehr komplexe Zusammenhänge.

The objective of this project is to experimentally introduce in Hymenoscuphus fraxineus (ash dieback fungus) different hypovirulent inducing viruses from the chestnut blight fungus Cryphonectria parasitica and explore their behaviour in the new fungal host. In the best case, such viruses may also induce hypovirulence in H. fraxineus and, thus, be useful as biocontrol agents against ash dieback.

In this project, we conduct monitoring of tree-associated fungi and oomycetes in forests of Azerbaijan. We use metabarcoding for the detection of fungal DNA from environmental samples and transfer technical knowledge to the Azerbaijani partner for future monitoring.

To differentiate between dead and alive fungi that may be imported with plant trade to new environments, we are testing a novel ONT sequencing technology on important fungal pathogens.

This project aims at investigating the effects of urbanization on diversity of foliar fungal endophytes of trees.
