About

I’m a Data Scientist / Software Engineer working within LWF program. On my day to day routine, I’m responsible for: i) a user-friendly data(base) management, data QA/QC, data access, etc., ii) serve as a bridge between research community and big data; iii) advancing harmonization and standardization of Essential Variables (EVs) for Long-Term Ecological Research in Europe (LTER-Europe). Prior, I spent 10 years doing basic research, focused on disentangling effect of different exogenous and indigenous factors on tree and stand level growth and biomass accumulation, stand dynamics and disturbance history, and forest biodiversity. I’m passionate about using working tools as R, Fortran, SQL, ArcGis to uncover meaningful information from large and variable data-set into tangible scientific outputs.

I’m really into sports like running, skiing, climbing, and hiking, and I try to do these as often as I can. It’s my way of staying fit and enjoying the outdoors. Spending time with my kids and getting them involved in these activities is also a big part of my life. For me, it’s all about keeping active and making the most of family time outdoors.

Projekte

Nowcast and predict forest condition from TreeNet data with the help of machine learning.

During periods of low water availability, trees differently modulate C and H2O fluxes to balance photosynthesis, growth, and other metabolic activities. However, we still do not know how increased vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and reduced soil water availability periods affect whole-tree hydraulics.

Using advanced dendrometer technology, we aim to unravel drought stress and growth patterns in European forests. By developing new analysis methods and leveraging a network of research sites, it seeks to pinpoint areas most vulnerable to drought across Central Europe.

This project investigates different ways of visualizing the complex data collected at the Pfynwald research site.

The VPDrought Experiment aims to disentangle the effects of air and soil drought on forests. This is the first time worldwide that such an experiment is being conducted in this combination and quality. It is being carried out in the Pfynwald forest on an existing WSL research site.

The Long-Term Ecologiocal Research in Europe (LTER-Europe) capitalizes on research infrastructures such as the in-situ network of sites and information technology. Thousands of research projects have been carried out taking advantage of this infrastructure.

It is important to have good information on the condition of the trees in the plots. Therefore scientists determine the relationships between crown condition and a number of environmental parameters.
