Abstract

Terrestrial ecosystems are linked to their aquatic counterparts through reciprocal exchanges of resources, including animals. Aquatic-to-terrestrial subsidies are often relatively small, but they can be nutritionally-critical for a diversity of terrestrial consumers. However, they also may carry significant contaminant loads, particularly in anthropogenically-impacted watersheds. Global change processes, including land use change, climate change, and biodiversity declines, are altering the quantity and quality of aquatic subsidies, potentially shifting the balance of costs and benefits of aquatic subsidies for terrestrial consumers. Our upcoming work in the Eawag/ETHZ Food Web Ecophysiology group will strive to understand how climate change is altering the bright sides of aquatic subsidies along elevational gradients in Central Switzerland, in terms of how shifting seasons and species composition are affecting aquatic fatty acid fluxes, as well as their potential dark sides, for instance how glacial melting could be increasing aquatic contaminant fluxes.

Biodiversity Seminars

The Biodiversity Seminar Series are organized by the WSL Biodiversity Center. Every two weeks, we aim to host a seminar speaker who presents research or outreach on topics relevant to the biodiversity community at WSL. The seminars are public and are usually broadcast online.
