WSL publications

The number of publications is a key factor in research. The WSL classifies publications into three main categories: i) reviewed publications indexed in WoS CC (Web of Science Core CollectionTM), ii) reviewed publications not indexed in WoS CC, and iii) non-peer-reviewed outreach publications. Publications indexed in WoS CC are those that have gone through a scientific independently peer-reviewed process, have been published in international scientific journals and are indexed in the Web of Science Core CollectionTM (WoS CC) of the company Clarivate.

In 2023, WSL researchers published 680 peer-reviewed papers indexed in WoS CC. The number of publications in peer-reviewed non-WoS CC-indexed journals was 97. In addition, WSL staff produced 298

outreach publications, aimed at transferring knowledge to practice and, in general, to a non-academic audience.

The numerous WoS CC-indexed publications, many of which were published in the leading journals in their respective domains, as well as the increasing number of citations, the consistently high output of outreach publications, and the strong presence of WSL researchers in the media are all clear indications that our work is relevant and valued by academics and society alike.

Teaching and student supervision

WSL lectures and courses complement university teaching, covering topics in which WSL has special expertise. In 2023, around 165 WSL staff gave a total of 3749 hours of lectures at the two Swiss federal universities, at cantonal universities, at Swiss universities of applied sciences and at tertiary-level institutions abroad. The largest proportion (around 65%) was given at both Federal Institutes of Technology, especially at ETHZ. At the end of 2023, WSL had a total of 27 professors at various universities in Switzerland and abroad.

In addition to giving university lectures, WSL organised or co-organised several practical continuing training courses for summer and winter schools and a number of events. WSL also supervises theses for bachelor's and master's' degrees and doctoral students. In 2023, WSL researchers supervised 180 doctoral students and 157 theses for bachelor's or master's degrees.
