Research interests

I investigate the effects of habitat structure, composition and configuration on the distribution, abundance and diversity of birds, mammals and insects. Since habitat quality is strongly affected by land use and climate change, the main objective of my research is to contribute evidence for practical guidance in biodiversity conservation and wildlife management. I apply and combine different methods for data collection and analysis, such as field sampling, remote-sensing techniques, modeling approaches and genetic analysis. The focus of my studies is on

(1) abiotic and biotic predictors of forest species richness,

(2) the effects of climate and land-use change on biodiversity,

(3) ecological concepts of nature, species and biodiversity conservation.

Projects

The Translational Centre Biodiversity Conservation aims to bridge gaps between research and practice. Experts from research and practice work together in working groups to process knowledge into practical synthesis products.

How are insects doing in Switzerland? What changes have there been, which are underway, what are their causes? WSL and four partner institutions are investigating these questions in the project INSECT.

This project investigates the biotic communities and food webs between ground vegetation and tree canopies, contributing to a better understanding of the three-dimensional relationship between forest structure and physiology, biodiversity, and ecosystem functions.

An increase of extreme environmental disturbances is expected, which is for different reasons a big challenge for forest stakeholders on the operating-, strategic-, financial- and environmental level. Using diverse methods, we aim to describe the complexity of the current problem.

We investigate the development of the frequency and species richness of aquatic and terrestrial insect communities in Switzerland.

The project aims to assess how the abundance of spruce bark beetles affects populations of woodpeckers. Long-term datasets on the annual amount of spruce timber infested by bark beetles and woodpecker abundance data, along with environmental variables are being used to model these relationships.

We investigate the development of insect abundance trends in Switzerland during the last 30 years.

The main goal of MoGLI is to project the potential distribution of the most common Swiss woody species across the entire forested area of Switzerland.

We study the distribution, abundance and dynamics of a mountain hare population in a strictly protected Alpine ecosystem with annual field surveys and non-invasive genetic methods.

What is the importance of the structural diversity and composition of forest stands for a rich forest biodiversity? This is the key question at the centre of this study.
