Niklaus Zimmermann again among most frequently cited scientists

WSL ecologist Niklaus Zimmermann is once again one of the world's most highly cited scientists, for the ninth time in a row. New on the list is glaciologist Matthias Huss, who works at WSL and ETH Zurich.

The Highly Cited Researcher list, published by Clarivate Analytics, includes researchers who have had a significant impact on their field by publishing several frequently cited papers in the last decade. This year, the list includes 6938 researchers from 69 countries. Switzerland was in ninth place worldwide with 112 mentions.

Niklaus Zimmermann was nominated in the field of environmental sciences. Here he is in fact one of the 200 most distinguished researchers, seven of whom work in Switzerland.

In his research, Zimmermann investigates the causes of large-scale to global patterns in plant and animal biodiversity. He uses various computational models to analyse and explain these patterns. Niklaus Zimmermann is a titular professor at ETH Zurich. He has co-authored around 200 scientific articles, including two of the most cited in the field of ecology and environment, as well as a widely acclaimed textbook.

Matthias Huss was listed in the cross-field category, along with 32 other researchers in Switzerland.

Huss researches the reaction of glaciers to climate change and the corresponding effects on water runoff and landscape change. He heads the Swiss glacier measurement network GLAMOS. He has published around 150 papers to date and has been awarded various young researcher awards. Due to his popular research topic, he is also very present in the public media.

Another of the most cited scientists, who also conducts part of his research at WSL, is Peter Verburg. He was among the 270 most influential researchers in the field of social sciences. The geographer works mainly at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in the Netherlands and researches the development of land use.
