Elke Kellner, PhD and Thomas Shaw, PhD both earned a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions postdoctoral grant. These very competitive individual fellowships will support them in the pursuit of their research within the fields of natural hazards and sustainable development.
Thomas Shaw will explore the complex mechanisms that drive the response of mountain glaciers to changes in temperature. The project TEMPEST will build upon Thomas’ earlier PhD work to explore these processes in more detail at a number of Swiss glaciers, testing key elements of the theory while moving toward finding globally applicable methods for simulating glacier melt. Thomas works in the WSL research group High Mountain Glaciers and Hydrology (HIMAL).
Elke Kellner will investigate how complex multi-level trade-offs are managed in multi-interest governance systems to reach sustainable development. It is widely agreed that the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change will only be achieved if important trade-offs are addressed and transformed. Within her project GOVTROFF she will develop a coherent method to study resource management and then apply it to case studies of three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Grand Canyon National Park, Yosemite National Park, and Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch. Elke will conduct her research first at University of Arizona and then at University of Bern.
The Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions support researchers at all stages of their careers, regardless of age and nationality. Researchers working across all disciplines are eligible for funding. The MSCA also support cooperation between industry and academia and innovative training to enhance employability and career development.
