There is an increasing demand for current and comprehensive forest information due to climate change, economic pressures, and sustainable forest management. Current remote sensing technologies and methodological advances in deep learning provide valuable information for forest assessments, but their integration into forestry practices is slow and user expectations are often unmet due to knowledge gaps and misunderstandings. Challenges include technical language and skill barriers, misunderstanding the information content of remote sensing-based forest products, and adapting existing user processes and systems. Thus, efforts, such as expert groups of researchers and practitioners, aiming to bridge this gap by fostering collaboration, are highly needed. These initiatives should focus on a regular knowledge exchange and active participation of practitioners, needs-orientated practical workshops, and iterative development of remote sensing-based forest products incorporating user feedback. Here, using an example of a first initiative on integrating remote sensing research with practice in Switzerland, we show that collaborative efforts improve remote sensing-based forest products and further stimulate the development of user-orientated methods in the forestry sector.

Noise exposure has been linked to numerous adverse health effects. However, research has demonstrated the beneficial role of natural green on human well-being and stress restoration. This study aimed to elucidate the association of exposure to road traffic noise (RTN) and residential green with annoyance, and evaluate the relative importance of road traffic compared to other noise sources based on two surveys: a cross-sectional field study in the city of Zurich (n = 1,111), and a nationwide survey across Switzerland (n = 2,229). Exposure-response curves of long-term noise annoyance regressed on residential green (normalized difference vegetation index, NDVI) and road traffic noise exposure at the participants' home (day-evening-night level L_den) were established. Results from the nationwide sample showed a significant negative association of residential green with noise annoyance: Increasing greenness from the 5^th to 95^th percentile NDVI was associated with strongly reduced RTN annoyance, corresponding to an equivalent sound level reduction of 4 dB. For the city of Zurich sample, this difference amounted to a non-significant 3 dB. In a general assessment of noise sources, survey respondents in both samples rated noise from construction sites as similarly annoying as from road traffic. The results underscore a potentially beneficial role of urban green in decreasing RTN annoyance, and pinpoint relevant noise sources beyond road traffic. Our findings highlight current issues of source-specific noise within communities and suggest the need for policies that integrate noise reduction and green space expansion, enhancing restorative environments and thus mitigating noise impacts for public health.

Der Arvenwald God da Tamangur, der im Zentrum dieses Berichts steht, gehört sicher zu den bekanntesten Wäldern der Schweiz. Neben der Tatsache, dass es sich dabei wohl um den höchstgelegenen geschlossenen Arvenwald Europas handelt, hat gewiss auch die landschaftliche Schönheit des ihn umgebenden Tals zu seiner Bekanntheit beigetragen. Auffallend ist, dass er nicht nur Baumliebhaber und Naturfreundinnen fasziniert, sondern im Laufe der Zeit als Symbol und Namensgeber für eine Vielzahl von politischen Initiativen und kulturellen Auseinandersetzungen diente. Im Sinn einer Waldmonografie wird in diesem Bericht einerseits die Vielfalt dieser Bedeutungszuschreibungen und Inspirationen dargestellt. Zum anderen wird die Entwicklung des Waldes selbst dokumentiert. Hinzu kommt die Nutzungsgeschichte, da der God da Tamangur während langer Zeit in seiner Entwicklung stark von den ihn umgebenden Alpen beeinflusst wurde. Diese Zielsetzung erfordert eine grosse Quellen- und Methodenvielfalt. Neben den zahlreichen Publikationen, die bereits zum God da Tamangur erschienen sind, waren dabei die Interpretation schriftlicher Quellen, die Wiederholung historischer Fotografien, Luftbildanalysen und die Auswertung einer Reihe von Interviews mit in erster Linie lokalen Gewährsleuten besonders aufschlussreich. Die jahrhundertelange Beweidung schränkte das Aufkommen junger Bäume stark ein und der God da Tamangur präsentierte sich zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts als ein lockerer und lichter Wald, der vorwiegend aus sehr alten, mächtigen Arven bestand. Die Tatsache, dass abgestorbene Arven über sehr lange Zeit als sogenannte Dürrständer stehen blieben, liess manche Besucher auf einen sterbenden Bestand schliessen und liess ihn zu einer idealen Metapher für die rätoromanische Sprache werden, um deren Anerkennung in dieser Zeit gerungen wurde. Viele weitere Bedeutungszuschreibungen folgten, bis der Bestand gegen Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts als Naturwaldreservat einen Schutzstatus erhielt, der zu einer starken Einschränkung der Beweidung führte. Das Waldbild hat sich nicht zuletzt durch den Rückgang der Beweidung verändert und wird heute in weiten Teilen von kräftigem Jungwuchs geprägt. Ebenfalls unter Schutz stehen heute Teile der den God da Tamangur umgebenden Moorlandschaft von nationaler Bedeutung, die ganz wesentlich zum Reiz der Landschaft von Tamangur beiträgt. Die gesellschaftlichen Bedürfnisse und Nutzungsansprüche ändern sich. Zusätzlich wird die Walddynamik heute, und in Zukunft noch verstärkt, durch die Auswirkungen des sich ändernden Klimas beeinflusst. Mit Sicherheit werden sich Wald und Landschaft unter den Ansprüchen der heutigen Freizeitgesellschaft und den Auswirkungen des Klimawandels weiter verändern. Es ist zu hoffen, dass die berührende Schönheit und die Faszination des God da Tamangur und der ihn umgebenden Landschaft erhalten bleibt, damit sich auch zukünftige Generationen von ihnen inspirieren lassen können.

To achieve carbon neutrality in China, wood vaulting, which involves semi-permanent wood storage, should be integrated with proper thinning of plantation forests to maximize the forest carbon sink. Here, we mapped the optimal forest stand biomass carbon density and stand age in terms of forest biomass carbon sink in China during 2020‒2060, by identifying the turning points in the partial impacts of various influence factors on the satellite-based forest biomass carbon sink. Subsequently, we explored how, where, and when to perform plantation forest thinning under future climates through to 2060. When combined with wood vaulting, the optimal spatiotemporal thinning schemes could enhance national forest biomass carbon sink during 2020‒2060 by 32.2% and 32.8% compared to natural conditions under the high and medium emission scenarios, without compromising the forest live biomass carbon stock. Our study outlines a new pathway towards carbon neutrality in China, offering insights for global climate change mitigation.

Rising temperatures and an increasing frequency of extreme events, such as heatwaves pose major threats to ecosystems, impacting ectothermic organisms including fish. Elevated water temperatures, coupled with reduced oxygen levels, intensify stress and mortality among fish fauna, necessitating urgent action to address the impacts of heatwaves on biodiversity. Here, we propose to combine sub-seasonal to seasonal (S2S) forecasting methodologies with ecological modeling integrated with physiological parameters. Specifically, we developed a sub-seasonal forecast model designed to assess fish stress during heatwaves in Swiss rivers. We first compiled from the literature physiological parameters related to fish thermal stress to construct a thermal stress index. The developed model integrates deep-learning forecasts of water temperature with fish physiological data and species distribution modelling to offer a process-driven prediction of heat-stress responses. To validate its efficacy, we retrospectively applied the model to the 2018 heatwave across 20 measurement stations on lowland Swiss rivers, comparing its results with assessments from experts and practitioners. We found that the model successfully forecast stress peaks 2–3 weeks in advance at two validated key sites, where high mortality was reported by practitioners. By classifying fish species based on their thermal sensitivity, we identified a high vulnerability of salmonids. Applications of our model intend to alleviate climate change impacts, resulting in targeted actions to reduce local fish mortality.
