Erste Auswirkungen des Klimawandels lassen sich im Wald beobachten und machen ihn bei den Waldfachleuten zunehmend zum Thema. Es wird immer deutlicher, dass besonders bei waldbaulichen Entscheiden mit langfristigen Folgen der Klimawandel berücksichtigt werden muss. Daher haben das Bundesamt für Umwelt BAFU und die Eidg. Forschungsanstalt für Wald, Schnee und Landschaft WSL im Jahr 2009 das umfassende Forschungsprogramm «Wald und Klimawandel» lanciert. Ziel war, Grundlagenwissen zu den Auswirkungen des Klimawandels auf Wald und Waldleistungen zu erarbeiten. Auch sollten Anpassungsstrategien und Entscheidungshilfen für die Praxis entwickelt werden. Entsprechend den vielen offenen Fragen war das Forschungsprogramm thematisch und disziplinär breit angelegt. Es wirkte unter den Forschenden als Katalysator, der personelle Kapazitäten für die Thematik mobilisierte, und half, Kompetenzen aufzubauen.
Dieses Buch ist eine wissenschaftliche Synthese von Ergebnissen des Forschungsprogrammes und weiterer Forschung. Der Kenntnisstand zum Schweizer Wald im Klimawandel wird umfassend dargestellt. Das Buch richtet sich insbesondere an Waldfachleute, die Autorinnen und Autoren möchten aber auch das Interesse weiterer Kreise für den Wald im Klimawandel wecken. Es liefert damit wichtige Grundlagen für den Transfer wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse in die Praxis und insbesondere für Adaptationsstrategien.

Les essences exotiques sont des essences etrangeres a la station qui ne sont pas naturellement presentes dans une region donnee et ont ete introduites par l’homme. Parmi les nombreuses essences introduites depuis l’Antiquite, peu se sont revelees appropriees. Aujourd’hui, les essences exotiques introduites depuis l’an 1500 environ representent 0,6% la foret suisse; la moitie est constituee de douglas. Leur part tend a augmenter et elles se regenerent de plus en plus par elles-memes; une partie d’entre elles ont un caractere envahissant. Les principaux avantages de certaines essences exotiques sont leur croissance rapide, la haute valeur de leur bois et leur tolerance elevee a la secheresse. Les principaux inconvenients de certaines especes sont leur grande vulnerabilite aux ravageurs, leurs effets negatifs sur la biodiversite et le risque qu’elles deviennent envahissantes et evincent des especes indigenes. Les avantages et les inconvenients doivent etre consideres de facon differenciee selon l’essence et la station.
Une evaluation du potentiel de 19 essences exotiques montre que le douglas (Pseudotsuga menziesii), le sapin de Vancouver (Abies grandis) et le hetre de l’Orient (Fagus orientalis) peuvent etre actuellement recommandes pour certaines stations. Ces essences peuvent contribuer a diminuer les risques que representent les changements climatiques pour les prestations forestieres, en particulier pour la production de bois et les forets protectrices. D’autres essences ne peuvent etre recommandees qu’a certaines conditions ou sont meme deconseillees. Des essais a long terme avec d’autres especes sont en cours et leurs resultats permettront de completer les evaluations actuelles. Les essences exotiques doivent etre utilisees dans des melanges avec d’autres essences indigenes et ne pas etre introduites dans des associations forestieres rares ou sensibles sur le plan ecologique.

Gastbaumarten sind standortfremde Baumarten, die in einem bestimmten Gebiet von Natur aus nicht vorkommen und vom Menschen eingeführt wurden. Von den vielen seit dem Altertum eingeführten Gastbaumarten haben sich nur wenige bewahrt. Heute haben die seit dem Ende des 15. Jahrhunderts eingeführten Gastbaumarten im Schweizer Wald einen Vorratsanteil von 0,6 Prozent, wovon die Douglasie die Hälfte ausmacht. Der Anteil der Gastbaumarten nimmt tendenziell zu, und sie verjüngen sich zunehmend von selbst, wobei sich wenige Arten invasiv verhalten. Die wichtigsten Vorzüge einiger Gastbaumarten sind ihr rasches Wachstum, ihr wertvolles Holz und ihre hohe Trockenheitstoleranz. Die wichtigsten Nachteile einiger Arten sind eine hohe Schädlingsanfälligkeit, negative Auswirkungen auf die Biodiversität und die Gefahr, dass sie sich invasiv ausbreiten und standortheimische Arten verdrängen. Die Vor- und Nachteile sind je nach Baumart und Standort differenziert zu beurteilen.
Eine Einschätzung des Potenzials von 19 Gastbaumarten zeigt, dass zurzeit die Douglasie (Pseudotsuga menziesii), die Grosse Küstentanne (Abies grandis) und die Orientbuche (Fagus orientalis) fur bestimmte Standorte empfohlen werden können. Diese Baumarten können die Risiken des Klimawandels für die Waldleistungen, besonders fur die Holzproduktion und im Schutzwald, vermindern. Andere Baumarten können nur eingeschränkt empfohlen werden, oder es ist von ihnen abzuraten. Langzeitversuche mit weiteren Arten sind im Gang und werden die heutige Einschätzung ergänzen. Werden Gastbaumarten verwendet, soll dies in Mischung mit einheimischen Baumarten geschehen und nicht in seltenen oder ökologisch sensiblen Waldgesellschaften.

Les premières conséquences des changements climatiques sont perceptibles en forêt et suscitent une attention croissante dans les milieux forestiers. Il est de plus en plus évident qu’il faut prendre en compte les changements climatiques lors des décisions sylvicoles, surtout si elles ont des effets à long terme. C’est pourquoi l’Office fédéral de l’environnement OFEV et l’Institut fédéral de recherches sur la forêt, la neige et le paysage WSL ont lancé en 2009 un vaste programme de recherche intitulé «Forêts et changements climatiques». Celui-ci avait pour objectif d’accroître des connaissances fondamentales sur les conséquences des changements climatiques sur la forêt et ses prestations. Des stratégies d’adaptation et des aides à la décision pour la pratique devaient également être élaborées. En raison des nombreuses questions à explorer, le programme de recherche s’est appuyé sur un large éventail de thèmes et de disciplines. Il a joué le rôle d’un catalyseur auprès des scientifiques, mobilisant les ressources en personnel autour de sa thématique et contribuant à développer des compétences.
Cet ouvrage est une synthèse scientifique des résultats du programme de recherche et d’autres études. Il présente en profondeur l’état des connaissances sur la forêt suisse dans le contexte des changements climatiques. L’ouvrage s’adresse en particulier aux spécialistes des milieux forestiers, mais les auteures et les auteurs souhaitent également éveiller l’intérêt d’autres cercles à cette thématique. Il fournit des éléments importants pour le transfert de connaissances scientifiques vers la pratique, notamment pour les stratégies d’adaptation.

Niche diversification is prominent among the mechanisms proposed to explain tropical rain forest tree diversity, with many studies focusing on trade-offs among shade tolerance and growth. Less obvious is the impact of occasional, ephemeral and often minor disturbances on tree seedling survival. We propose that differential tolerances to soil waterlogging can contribute to the distribution of tree seedling communities along microtopographical gradients. We test this hypothesis experimentally by evaluating survival and performance of planted seedlings across microtopographical gradients in a periodically inundated tropical rain forest environment. Survival and relative growth rates were assessed for six Shorea (Dipterocarpaceae) species in Sepilok Forest Reserve (Sabah, Malaysia) over a 2-yr period, during which seedlings were subjected to two brief flooding events. The species were selected on the basis of soil habitat affinities, with two species being primarily associated with low-lying alluvial flats subject to inundation, two being associated with non-flooded mudstone hills, and two species occurring in both habitats. Seedling performance was related to microtopographic elevation within and among plots and to soil moisture among plots. The faster growing species, Shorea argentifolia, Shorea leprosula and Shorea parvifolia, tended to be more vulnerable to high soil moisture in terms of mortality than the three species with lower growth rates. Within plots, soil moisture was inversely correlated with microelevation, and seedlings located at higher microelevations had an increased probability of survival. Microtopographical differences in seedling position could therefore contribute to species assembly processes through differential mortality, particularly in areas subject to minor and ephemeral flooding events.Abstrak Kepelbagaian nic adalah di antara cadangan mekanisme yang menonjol untuk menerangkan kepelbagaian pokok tropika hutan hujan di mana kebanyakan kajian memberi tumpuan kepada keseimbangan di antara toleransi keadaan teduh dan pertumbuhan. Bagaimanapun, kesan gangguan yang mempengaruhi kemandirian anak pokok yang berlaku secara sekali-sekala, tidak kekal dan berkeamatan rendah masih kurang jelas. Kami mencadangkan bahawa perbezaan toleransi akibat kelimpahan air atas tanah semasa banjir boleh menyumbang kepada pengagihan komuniti anak pokok di sepanjang cerun mickrotopografi mukabumi. Spesies dipilih mengikut persamaan habitat tanah, di mana dua spesies dijumpai berasosiasi di tanah rendah aluvium yang kadang kala dilanda banjir, dan dua spesies lagi dijumpai di bukit batu lumpur yang tidak dibanjiri. Manakala dua spesies dijumpai di kedua-dua habitat. Prestasi tumbesaran anak pokok di dalam dan di antara plot dipengaruhi oleh ketinggian mukabumi, manakala pengaruh kelembapan tanah hanya didapati di antara plot. Dari segi kematian anak pokok, kelembapan tanah yang tinggi lebih memberi impak kepada spesies yang mempunyai kadar tumbesaran yang tinggi seperti Shorea argentifolia, Shorea leprosula dan Shorea parvifolia berbanding dengan daripada tiga spesies yang mempunyai kadar tumbesaran yang lebih rendah. Dalam plot, kelembapan tanah menunjukkan kaitan kadar songsang dengan ketinggian mikrotopografi mukabumi, dan anak pokok yang terletak di tanah lebih tinggi mempunyai kebarangkalian peningkatan daya hidup yang tinggi. Oleh yang demikian, perbezaan mikrotopografi dalam kedudukan anak pokok boleh mempengaruhi proses pengkelompokan spesies melalui ciri-ciri kematian yang berbeza, terutamanya di kawasan terdedah kepada peristiwa banjir kecil dan tidak kekal.

Aim: To test whether it is possible to establish a common biogeographical regionalization for plants and vertebrates in sub-Saharan Africa (the Afrotropical Region), using objective multivariate methods.
Location: Sub-Saharan Africa (Afrotropical Region).
Methods: We used 1° grid cell resolution databases for birds, mammals, amphibians and snakes (4142 vertebrate species) and c. 13% of the plants (5881 species) from the Afrotropical Region. These databases were analysed using cluster analysis techniques to define biogeographical regions. A β(sim) dissimilarity matrix was subjected to a hierarchical classification using the unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic averages (UPGMA). The five group-specific biogeographical regionalizations were compared against a regionalization developed from a combined database, and a regionalization that is maximally congruent with the five group-specific datasets was determined using a consensus classification. The regionalizations were interpreted against measures of spatial turnover in richness and composition for the five datasets as well as the combined dataset.
Results: We demonstrate the existence of seven well-defined and consistent biogeographical regions in sub-Saharan Africa. These regionalizations are statistically defined and robust between groups, with minor taxon-specific biogeographical variation. The proposed biogeographical regions are: Congolian, Zambezian, Southern African, Sudanian, Somalian, Ethiopian and Saharan. East Africa, the West African coast, and the transitions between the Congolian, Sudanian and Zambezian regions are unassigned. The Cape area in South Africa, Afromontane areas and the coastal region of East Africa do not emerge as distinct regions but are characterized by high neighbourhood heterogeneity, rapid turnover of species and high levels of narrow endemism.
Main conclusions: Species distribution data and modern cluster analysis techniques can be used to define biogeographical regions in Africa that reflect the patterns found in both vertebrates and plants. The consensus of the regionalizations between different taxonomic groups is high. These regions are broadly similar to those proposed using expert opinion approaches. Some previously proposed transitional zones are not recognized in this classification.
