Sentinel-2 satellite data enables multispectral monitoring of the earth at a high temporal revisit rate. Combining this information with a network of optical ground measurements enables a more detailed and a more complete understanding of terrestrial ecosystems. However, independent optical ground measurements often lack consistency, especially when comparing different sites in geographically remote locations. Using the very high temporal and spectral resolution offered by the automated field spectrometer systems FloX and RoX (Fluorescence Box and Reflectance Box, respectively, JB-Hyperspectral Devices GmbH, Duesseldorf, Germany), we investigated continuous time series ranging over three years and in ten different locations across Europe, Africa, America and Asia. The continuous records of ground-measured reflectance were first validated against Sentinel-2 top of canopy (TOC) reflectance to evaluate the consistency of the in-situ network. Our results suggest a good agreement of ground-measured reflectance with Sentinel-2 TOC reflectance in vegetation and snow with R² around 0.79 in the 833 nm band and R² up to 0.94 in the bands around 559 nm and 492 nm, demonstrating good consistency across the network. Spatial misalignment of Sentinel-2 pixel-sizes with respect to the different footprint sizes of the ten automated spectrometers on the ground, atmospheric uncertainties, sub-optimal instrument setup and spatial-temporal variable landscape heterogeneity were identified as the most relevant sources of uncertainties in the network. Comparing the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Transformed Chlorophyll Absorption in Reflectance Index (TCARI) and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) between ground and satellite revealed a decreasing agreement with increasing complexity of index formulation. The best agreement between satellite and ground was exhibited by NDVI with R² around 0.96 and relative error of 4.3% investigating vegetation and snow across all ten sites. Furthermore, we identified a seasonal pattern in residuals of NDVI between ground and satellite in an alpine ecosystem in northern Italy, which was associated with increased spatial heterogeneity due to the effects of diverse vegetation phenology and snowfall. In contrast, a random distribution of residuals was recognized in a rather uniform oak forest canopy in southern France. Clustering Sentinel-2 pixels with respect to their temporal patterns in NDVI identified similar areas seen as homogenous in the canopy of Torgnon, Italy, and Observatoire de Haute-Provence (OHP), France, each. The very high temporal resolution of NDVI measured on the ground confirmed overlap with matched homogenous areas, but must consider seasonal landscape heterogeneity. Using well-standardized and globally homogenous Sentinel-2 TOC reflectance enabled the assessment of uncertainties in ten field spectrometer sites around the world. The standardization of the automated field spectrometers, their data products and data annotation were essential prerequisites that enabled joint validation against Sentinel-2. Harmonizing optical ground measurements with respect to a satellite is promising for future research to ensure the valid intercomparison and transfer of data products across different sites in a network worldwide.

Recent studies indicate an increase in the frequency of extreme compound dryness days (days with both extreme soil AND air dryness) across central Europe in the future, with little information on their impact on the functioning of trees and forests. This study aims to quantify and assess the impact of extreme soil dryness, extreme air dryness, and extreme compound dryness on the functioning of trees and forests. For this, >15 years of ecosystem-level (carbon dioxide and water vapor fluxes) and 6–10 years of tree-level measurements (transpiration and growth) each from a montane mixed deciduous forest (CH-Lae) and a subalpine evergreen coniferous forest (CH-Dav) in Switzerland, is used. The results showed extreme air dryness limitation on CO₂ fluxes and extreme soil dryness limitations on water vapor fluxes. Additionally, CH-Dav was mainly affected by extreme air dryness whereas CH-Lae was affected by both extreme soil dryness and extreme air dryness. The impact of extreme compound dryness on net CO₂ uptake (about 75 % decrease) was more due to higher increased ecosystem respiration (40 % and 70 % increase at CH-Dav and CH-Lae, respectively) than decreased gross primary productivity (10 % and 40 % decrease at CH-Dav and CH-Lae, respectively). A significant negative impact on evapotranspiration and transpiration was only observed at CH-Lae during extreme soil and compound dryness (about 25 % decrease). Furthermore, with some differences, the tree-level impact on tree water deficit, transpiration, and growth were consistent with the ecosystem-level impact on carbon uptake and evapotranspiration. Finally, the impact of extreme dryness showed no significant relationship with tree allometry (diameter and height) but across different tree species. The projected future is likely to expose these forest areas to more extreme and frequent dryness conditions, thus compromising the functioning of trees and forests, thereby calling for management interventions to increase the adaptive capacity and resistance of these forests.

Evapotranspiration (ET) from the land surface to the atmosphere is a major component of Earth's water cycle, and comprises both transpiration (T) of xylem water from plants and evaporation (E) of water from soils and vegetation surfaces. These two component fluxes respond differently to changes in temperature, water availability and atmospheric CO₂ concentrations. Concurrent eddy covariance (EC) measurements above and below forest canopies provide a promising approach to partition ET into E and T. However, below-canopy EC measurements are rare, and questions remain regarding their spatial variability, canopy coupling, and temporal dynamics. To address these challenges, we measured and partitioned ET over more than three years, using concurrent above- and below-canopy EC towers in a montane forest at Sagehen Creek in California's Sierra Nevada mountains. This is the establishing study for the AmeriFlux site US-SHC. The main environmental control for ET was available energy; other important controls were canopy & soil temperature, soil moisture, vapor pressure deficit, and wind speed. Below-canopy measurements at two locations within the above-canopy footprint were similar to one another, suggesting low spatial heterogeneity in understory ET near the creek at our Sagehen site. We observed a total forest ET of 606 ± 50 mm yr⁻¹ with 275 ± 17 mm yr⁻¹ measured in the understory (all mean ± SD) during the water years 2018–2020. Interannual variability in ET and T was small despite large variability in precipitation totals; thus the P–ET water balance was mainly driven by variations in water supply. Partitioning the components of total forest ET at Sagehen with concurrent EC measurements showed that on average, 67–74% of ET originated from T (47% from trees and 20–27% from understory vegetation), while 26–33% were from E (mostly from the understory). Our results demonstrate the potential of concurrent above- and below-canopy EC measurements for ET partitioning.

Climate extremes threaten the land carbon sink and it is important to understand their impact in a changing climate. A recent study provides new insights on reduced forest carbon uptake during the severe 2022 drought and heatwave across Europe.
