Le scolyte curvidenté est considéré comme le plus important scolyte du sapin blanc. Pendant les années chaudes et sèches, l’espèce a tendance à se multiplier en masse et les sapins blancs affaiblis sont considérés comme particulièrement vulnérables.

Les cécidomyies du douglas envahissantes du genre Contarinia sont originaires d’Amérique du Nord et se propagent en Europe depuis 2015. En 2022, les cécidomyies du douglas ont été détectés pour la première fois en Suisse, où leur zone de répartition s’étend principalement le long des frontières allemande et française.

Die invasiven Douglasiengallmücken der Gattung Contarinia stammen ursprünglich aus Nordamerika und breiten sich seit 2015 in Europa aus. Im Jahr 2022 wurden die Gallmücken zum ersten Mal auch in der Schweiz nachgewiesen, wo sich ihr Verbreitungsgebiet hauptsächlich über die Regionen entlang der deutschen und französischen Grenze erstreckt.

Der Grosse Waldgärtner befällt hauptsächlich Föhrenarten und verdankt seinen Namen dem Reifungsfrass seiner Jungkäfer in den Kronen vitaler Bäume, welcher zu verkürzten Trieben und dadurch zu einem wie von Menschenhand erzeugten Kronenaspekt führen kann.

Die Holländische Eichenminiermotte ist eine einheimische, in Europa weitverbreitete Schmetterlingsart. Ihr Auftreten galt in der Schweiz lange als unauffällig, in den letzten Jahren konnten im Wallis allerdings ausserordentliche Massenvermehrungen beobachtet werden.

L’hylésine du pin s’attaque principalement aux espèces de pins et doit son nom au fait que ses jeunes coléoptères effectuent un forage de maturation dans les couronnes d’arbres vitaux, ce qui peut entraîner un raccourcissement des pousses et donc un aspect du houppier qui semble avoir été créé par l’homme.

Der Krummzähnige Weisstannenborkenkäfer gilt forstwirtschaftlich als bedeutendster Weisstannenborkenkäfer. Während trocken-heissen Jahren neigt die Art zu Massenvermehrungen und geschwächte Weisstannen gelten als besonders anfällig.

La mineuse hollandaise du chêne est une espèce de papillon indigène très répandue en Europe. Sa présence en Suisse a longtemps été considérée comme discrète, mais ces dernières années, des pullulations exceptionnelles ont pu être observées en Valais.

Avec une longueur pouvant atteindre 4,5 cm, le sirex géant est l’une des plus grandes espèces d’hyménoptères d’Europe. En raison de l’activité de forage des larves jusque dans l’aubier, le bois de valeur peut être techniquement dévalorisé. En même temps, l’espèce joue un rôle important de pionnier dans l’exploitation du bois mort en créant des galeries profondes. Malgré son apparence et sa taille impressionnante, le sirex géant est totalement inoffensif pour l’homme.

Die Riesenholzwespe ist mit bis 4,5 cm Länge eine von Europas grössten Hautflüglerarten. Aufgrund der Frasstätigkeit der Larven bis tief in den Splint hinein, kann Wertholz technisch entwertet werden. Gleichzeitig übernimmt die Art durch die Erzeugung der tiefen Gänge eine wichtige Pionierrolle beim Abbau von Totholz. Trotz des wespenartigen Aussehens und der eindrücklichen Grösse ist die Riesenholzwespe für den Menschen völlig harmlos.

Xylosandrus compactus ist eine invasive Borkenkäferart aus Südostasien, welche sich mittlerweile in Afrika, Amerika, sowie auch einigen europäischen Ländern wie Frankreich, Italien, Slowenien oder Spanien etablieren konnte. Im Sommer 2023 wurde die Art erstmals für die Schweiz im Kanton Tessin nachgewiesen.

Xylosandrus compactus est une scolyte envahissant originaire d’Asie du Sud-Est, qui s’est entre-temps établie en Afrique, en Amérique, ainsi que dans certains pays européens comme la France, l’Italie, la Slovénie ou l’Espagne. En été 2023, l’espèce a été détectée pour la première fois en Suisse dans le canton du Tessin.

Since the early 1990s, the invasive pathogen Hymenoscyphus fraxineus has been spreading in Europe causing severe dieback of common ash (Fraxinus excelsior) and narrow-leaved ash (Fraxinus angustifolia). H. fraxineus also causes necrotic lesions at the stem base and on roots of ash trees, which frequently serve as an entry point of secondary wood decay fungi, like Armillaria spp. Rot of the stem base and roots leads to structural weaknesses of ash trees, which makes them prone to uprooting or stem fracturing during storm events. To prevent fatalities and damage to infrastructure it is crucial to timely identify and remove potentially hazardous ash trees. Here, we investigated the synergistic effects of H. fraxineus and Armillaria spp. on the health status (crown defoliation, presence, and extent of basal stem necroses) of mature trees of common ash in ten mixed forest stands in Switzerland over a four-year period (2018–2022). In addition, we conducted non-destructive static load tests on a set of 30 ash trees to assess their breaking and tipping stability so that stability weakness at the stem base could be related to tree health data. The health of the monitored ash trees declined rapidly during the monitoring period, indicating that also mature ash trees in mixed forests may be heavily impacted by ash dieback after prolonged exposure to H. fraxineus (here 12–13 years) and subsequent colonization by root rot pathogens. At the end of the monitoring, only 4.1 % of ash trees with a healthy crown (defoliation ≤ 25 %) remained and 75.4 % of ash trees showed basal stem necroses, which were, with a few exceptions, all colonized by Armillaria. Although the results from the static load tests indicated that predicting tree stability based on crown defoliation level and stem base damage level is not straightforward, i.e. also trees with advanced crown defoliation and stem necrosis can still be stable, our study shows that ash trees with necroses affecting at least 20 % of the basal stem circumference and trees with more than 75 % crown defoliation are likely to suffer from a weakness at the stem base. Building on the new findings and previous research, guidelines for the management of mature ash trees affected by ash dieback are suggested.

Nel 2003 è stato scoperto nel Regno Unito il microrganismo Phytophthora kernoviae che danneggia un gran numero di piante. È stato riscontrato con particolare frequenza su faggio comune (Fagus sylvatica) e rododendri (Rhododendron sp.). Il patogeno non è ancora presente in Svizzera ma qualora vi fosse introdotto c'è il rischio che si diffonda in modo simile al Regno Unito e che provochi danni ingenti, soprattutto nelle foreste.

Urban and forest trees provide valuable ecosystem services. However, they are increasingly threatened by invasive forest pests and pathogens. Trees in urban areas are often the first potential hosts non-native tree-feeding insects and tree pathogens (“pests”) encounter after introduction in a novel region. If the trees encountered are suitable hosts, these pests can establish and become invasive – eventually also in surrounding forests. Here, we compared tree species and genus composition between urban areas and surrounding forests and examined the implications for host availability for forest pests and potential effects on invasibility. We compiled and standardised 26 urban tree inventories, containing ∼ 500.000 individual trees. We used multivariate analyses to compare urban tree composition with forest tree composition from forests surrounding each municipality (10 km radius), derived from the Swiss National Forest Inventory. With > 1300 different tree species, species richness of urban trees was 17 times higher than species richness in surrounding forests. Linear models and multivariate analyses revealed that host availability for forest quarantine pests is significantly higher in urban areas than in forests, with large differences in host suitability for different quarantine pests between urban and forest tree assemblages. This indicates that differences in species composition in urban and forest trees can result in increased host availability, possibly facilitating the establishment of quarantine forest pests.

Der Eichenprozessionsspinner ist ein in Europa heimischer Schmetterling, der sich hauptsächlich auf Eichen entwickelt. Seine Raupen ernähren sich von Eichenblättern und können bei grossen Populationsdichten zur völligen Entlaubung der betroffenen Bäume führen. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit wird der Art zuteil, weil die Brennhaare ihrer Raupen allergische Reaktionen auslösen können.

La processionnaire du chêne est une espèce de papillon indigène d'Europe qui se développe principalement sur les chênes. Ses chenilles se nourrissent de feuilles de chêne et peuvent, en cas de fortes densités de population, entraîner la défoliation totale des arbres concernés. L'espèce fait l'objet d'une attention particulière car les poils urticants de ses chenilles peuvent provoquer des réactions allergiques.
