Research Interests

I study how forests respond to their environment and how the complex interplay of phenotypic traits determines tree response variation.

Motivated by the general quest of finding tree species, provenances and genotypes coping well with the changing climate, I am interested in answering questions such as which individuals benefit the most from an earlier start of the growing season? Which suffer the least from the increasing frequency of droughts or beetle infestations? And which show the highest potential for assisted migration at critical sites?

To answer these and other questions, I make use of proximal and remote sensing techniques, e.g., leaf-level spectroscopy, drone-based imaging, air- and satellite-borne data time series. I combine these with statistical methods and machine learning, to develop scalable, high-throughput, phenotyping approaches that alleviate the challenges of traditional measurements of plant traits and physiology.

Projects

The goal of this project is to contribute to the evaluation of non-native tree species that could potentially mitigate mortality in our forests, through scalable drone-based phenotyping approaches and the assessment of mechanistic traits, such as phenological plasticity and drought stress-resistance

The emergence of visible tree-stress symptoms caused by the emerald ash borer occurs only several years after its arrival and are hard to tell apart from those caused by soil drought. Here, we investigate the potential of reflectance spectroscopy as an early-warning screening tool.

FORWARDS aims to develop, test, and implement a European Observatory that will supply timely and detailed information on European forests' vulnerability to climate change impacts, and provide knowledge to guide climate smart forestry

Development of a cost-effective remote sensing tool based on optical spectroscopy to track the hybridization between European and oriental beech.

In this project, we investigate the potential of spectral proxies, obtained from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) high-resolution multispectral and thermal imaging, to detect trees pre-visual drought stress responses.

Photosynthesis of forest ecosystems can be reduced in spring most likely due to cold temperatures. Such cold-related processes are, however, not captured in mechanistic models and we thus aim to assess the mechanisms and frequencies of such depressions and include them into models.

As part of the Blue-Green Biodiversity Research Initiative (Eawag-WSL funded by ETH), we study differences in the effect of global environmental change on the phenology of primary production in lakes and their surrounding watersheds using remote sensing techniques.
