Main Projects

Monitoring natural forest reserves in Switzerland

The monitoring of natural forest reserves in Switzerland studies the natural forest using a standardised methodology based on forest inventories. There are 49 reserves under observation, which cover the most common forest types of Switzerland.

Primeval forest structures and biodiversity: A Swiss-Ukrainian research cooperation

The cooperation in forest research between Switzerland and Ukraine, which has existed since 1999, focusses on the topics of primeval forest research and the sustainable use of resources in the energy wood sector.

Projects

The MountEx project aims to develop guidance and tools for managing spruce-dominated mountain forests under extreme disturbances. By focusing on resilience and management priorities, MountEx is helping stakeholders prepare for unprecedented challenges for these vital ecosystems.

This project contributes to the Blue-Green Biodiversity Research Initiative – an Eawag-WSL collaboration focusing on Biodiversity at the interface of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.

An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle UAV equipped with a LiDAR sensor will be used to test its potential for regeneration structure assessments in mountain forests. The project aims to combine terrestrial regeneration mapping with LiDAR-based information to assess size, density and location of regeneration.

The main objective of this project is to elaborate how different diversity components in Swiss forest change with increasing area and how they depend on changing heterogeneity.

This is a working group with members from all over Europe carrying out research in primeval forest and forest reserves. The main goal of the group is to explore possibilities to join forces, enhance the visibility and exploit the potential of the existing long-term monitoring plots in primeval forests and forest reserves of Europe.

With a network of 57 experimental plantations we investigate which tree species will grow well in the Swiss forest under the climatic conditions in 30 - 50 years.

The goal of this project is to contribute to the evaluation of non-native tree species that could potentially mitigate mortality in our forests, through scalable drone-based phenotyping approaches and the assessment of mechanistic traits, such as phenological plasticity and drought stress-resistance
