Transversal section

   
  Diffuse- to semi-ring-porous wood. Pores solitary and in radial pore multiples and pore clusters. Growth ring boundaries distinct, marked by abrupt transition in pore size from latewood to earlywood. Fibres in ground tissue almost exclusively thickwalled. Gum deposits in heartwood vessels. Diffuse apotracheal parenchyma.
 
 

Radial section

   
  Simple perforation plates. Spiral thickenings, typically widely spaced. Uniseriate rays generally square to upright cells, multiseriate rays slightly heterogeneous, often square ray cells. Distinct spiral thickenings in vessels. Ground tissue composed of libriform fibres.
 
 

Tangential section

   
  Rays generally bi- to 4-seriate, often uniseriate, rarely wider than 5- to 6-seriate. Average height of multiseriate rays: 15 to 30, often much more cells.
 
 

Key characters

   
  Semi-ring- to diffuse-porous. Pore clusters. Simple perforation plates. Rays uniseriate and bi- to 7-seriate, heterogeneous. Spiral thickenings.
 
 

Remarks

   
  The wood of the two Prunus species (P. padus, P. mahaleb) cannot be differentiated on the basis of their wood anatomy.
