Populus alba L.

White Poplar

Salicaceae

Transversal section

Diffuse- to semi-ring-porous. Pores solitary or in radial groups or in radial rows of 2 to 3 multiples. Growth ring boundaries more or less distinct, depending on pore size transition from earlywood to latewood. Sparse, diffuse apotracheal parenchyma, occasionally in uniseriate, discontinuous terminal bands.

Radial section

Homogeneous rays, rare with square marginal cells. Simple perforation plates. Extremely large, simple ray-vessel pits. Libriform fibres present, fibre-tracheids absent.

Tangential section

Rays uniseriate, ray cells axial oval. Average ray height: 10 to 30 cells.

Key characters

Diffuse-porous. Uniseriate, homogeneous rays. Large ray-vessel pits.

Remarks

The Populus species cannot be distinguished from each other on the basis of their wood anatomy. Similar to Salix. When square ray cells are present, it is difficult to distinguish from species of the genus Salix.
